canna is a client-server based japanese input system.
after installing canna.rpm you can start the cannaserver with
~$ /etc/init.d/canna start
if you set start_canna="yes" in /etc/rc.config, the cannaserver will start automatically when booting.
clients which can use canna for japanese input can be xim-servers like kinput2 (see section 6.1.3 or nicolatter (see section 6.1.4) or applications which talk directly to the cannaserver without using x11, for example canuum (see section 6.3.1), xemacs (see section 6.3.5), or nvi-m17n (see section 6.3.3).
the suse canna.rpm comes with extensive documentation in postscript format:
mfabian@gregory:~$ tar itf /usr/share/doc/packages/canna/candoc.tar.bz2 candoc/ candoc/canlisp.ps candoc/proto12.ps candoc/canna.ps candoc/protocol.ps
these files are written in japanese. they can be viewed without problems with gs (ghostscript), when japanese fonts for ghostscript are installed (see section 15.3)
options and defaults for canna can be setup in a ~/.canna file in the users home directory. examples for such setup files can be found in /var/lib/canna/sample.
