input methods which do not use xim
an advantage of xim is, that the user interface to input japanese, chinese or korean is the same in all applications which support xim. other methods of inputting these languages are usually application dependent, for example the native support in xemacs for the japanese conversion backends canna or wnn has a unique user interface which works like this only in xemacs. but input using xim works exactly the same way in xemacs as it does in all other applications with xim support, for example netscape or kterm.
nevertheless one may want to use an input method which does not use xim, usually because one of the following reasons:
- one wants to input japanese, chinese or korean on the linux text console. when there is no x11, xim cannot be used.
- maybe the xim user interface is not very convenient to use (the user interface of xim depends on the type of the xim server used). therefore, if an application supports other methods of japanese input, one might prefer these even if xim is supported too by this application. for example the user interface of the native canna support in xemacs offers more functionality than the user interface of xim with kinput2 as the as the xim server and canna as the conversion backend. on top of that, the native xemacs/canna interface works with ``onthespot'' input style, whereas the xemacs/kinput2/canna interface only supports the less convenient ``overthespot'' input style.
