nicolatter

nicolatter is another japanese xim server, which can be used as an alternative to kinput2.

the ftp version of suse linux 8.1 contains nicolatter-1.7.2pre4, i recommend to install the updated package from

ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mfabian/8.1-i586/ mirrors: 1.1

nicolatter can currently use the conversion backends

canna (see section 6.2.1)¹³
wnn (see section 6.2.2)

nice features of nicolatter:

supports many different keyboard layouts, some of them can be used to input hiragana directly without transliteration from latin characters, for example:
- the nicola keyboard layout. the nicola layout is a special ergonomic keyboard layout, see

- the jis x 6002-1985 keyboard, which is the second most widely used keyboard layout in japan (after the qwerty layout).¹⁴
support for additional keyboard layouts can be added very easy
supports special input methods like tut-code, support for other such input methods can be added easily
the setup can be changed on the fly with an easy to use gui configuration tool (see figure 1). neither the xim client nor the server have to be restarted when the setup is changed. for example, one can easily switch between between the conversion backends canna and wnn or change the keyboard layout and the change takes effect immediately.
