further reading and interesting unicode related links
i highly recommend to read markus kuhn's famous ``utf-8 and unicode faq for unix/linux'' pages
http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mgk25/unicode.html
they offer very comprehensive information about unicode on linux.
there is also bruno haible's ``unicode howto'' which is available at
ftp://ftp.ilog.fr/pub/users/haible/utf8/unicode-howto.html
but it is already a bit out of date by now (the last update was in january 2001 and utf-8 support in linux has advanced a lot since then).
another very useful resource is the mailing list <linux-utf8-request@nl.linux.org>. to subscribe send mail to <linux-utf8-request@nl.linux.org> or use the web interface at
https://mail.nl.linux.org/cgi-bin/lsg2.cgi
